Telopea is a spectacular shrub from the Proteaceae family, highly valued in ornamental horticulture and commercial floriculture for its large, vibrant red inflorescences. Hybrid forms derived from crossing Telopea speciosissima and Telopea truncata combine aesthetic appeal with improved resilience to environmental fluctuations.
Native to Australian regions, this plant has specific cultivation requirements. The crop thrives in well-drained, acidic soils with low phosphorus levels, as Proteaceae species are extremely sensitive to excess phosphorus, which can lead to rapid root system decline.
Successful Telopea production requires a Mediterranean or subtropical climate with moderate temperatures and ample sunlight. The plant cannot tolerate waterlogged roots, making the provision of an excellent drainage layer essential in both greenhouse and outdoor production systems.
Agricultural management includes regular but moderate irrigation with lime-free, soft water. Maintaining optimal humidity is important, although active ventilation is required in dense planting schemes to minimize the risk of fungal outbreaks.
The primary commercial use of Telopea is the production of premium cut flowers for the floral industry. Due to the high density of their flower heads and exceptional vase life, they represent a high-value crop for specialized greenhouse operations.

The greatest threat to Telopea is posed by phytopathogenic fungi of the genus Phytophthora, which attack the roots under overly wet conditions. Prevention centers on the use of sterile growing media and strict irrigation management.
Pests such as mealybugs and spider mites can cause damage in greenhouse settings. Regular crop scouting allows for early detection of infestations, facilitating the application of biological or chemical control measures.
Harvesting
Harvesting is performed when a portion of the florets in the head has opened, while the remainder are in the colored bud stage. This timing ensures maximum longevity and quality for the cut material during post-harvest storage and distribution.
The use of sharp, sterile cutting tools is mandatory during harvest to prevent pathogen transmission into the plant. Following harvesting, stems are immediately placed in clean water supplemented with floral preservatives to maintain turgor pressure.
