Chinese juniper (Juniperus chinensis) is a hardy evergreen conifer belonging to the Cupressaceae family. Originally from Northeast Asia, this species is widely cultivated worldwide for its high adaptability and diverse ornamental forms, ranging from spreading shrubs to tall trees.
The plant thrives in full sun, which is essential for maintaining dense foliage and healthy development. It is tolerant of a wide range of soil types, provided that the growing medium is well-drained, as constant waterlogging leads to root rot.
Regarding climate requirements, the Chinese juniper is quite resilient to cold temperatures. However, it benefits from protection against strong, drying winds in winter and spring, which can cause dehydration of the needles.
Agricultural techniques involve moderate fertilization with specialized conifer fertilizers in early spring. Regular pruning helps to maintain the desired shape and stimulates the growth of new shoots, making it a staple in hedge and topiary design.
Soil moisture should be maintained consistently during the first few years after planting. Once established, the root system becomes robust enough to handle short-term dry spells, although mulching is recommended to preserve soil quality.

Rust disease is a significant threat to the Chinese juniper, often manifesting as orange, gelatinous galls on branches. Managing the surrounding environment by removing susceptible neighboring host plants is an effective preventive measure.
Needle blight, caused by various fungal pathogens, can result in the browning and eventual death of branches. Application of copper-based fungicides is typically recommended for controlling the spread of such infections in nurseries and gardens.
Spider mites are common pests that thrive in dry and warm conditions. They puncture needle cells, causing the foliage to turn gray or yellow. Frequent misting and the use of acaricides are effective management strategies.
Scale insects can also infest the stems, extracting vital sap. These pests are often difficult to spot until significant damage has occurred, so regular inspection of the lower branches is highly advised.
Root rot caused by Phytophthora species is a serious danger linked to poor drainage. Ensuring that the planting site has a proper drainage layer is the primary defense against this lethal soil-borne disease.
