Meserve holly (Ilex × meserveae) is a hybrid evergreen shrub belonging to the Aquifoliaceae family. Developed by crossing Ilex rugosa and Ilex aquifolium, it is specifically bred to combine the high winter hardiness of the former with the glossy, attractive foliage of the latter.

The plant thrives in climates with moderate temperatures and requires sites sheltered from drying winter winds and harsh direct sun, which can cause leaf scorch. It is widely valued in landscaping for its dense, bushy habit and ability to remain verdant throughout the coldest months.

Regarding soil requirements, Meserve holly prefers rich, slightly acidic to neutral, and well-drained soil. It is intolerant of waterlogged conditions, which can lead to root rot, so proper drainage preparation before planting is essential for long-term health and growth.
