The plant thrives in moderately moist, fertile, and well-drained soils with an acidic to neutral pH. It is highly sensitive to waterlogged conditions, which makes the installation of proper drainage systems essential when planting in heavy clay soils.

While Koehne holly can tolerate full sun, it prefers locations with partial shade, especially in regions with intense afternoon heat. It is crucial to protect young specimens from cold, desiccating winds during winter to maintain the hydration and vigor of the evergreen leaves.
