The plant requires high light intensity to maintain its characteristic compact shape and structural integrity. In an indoor environment, a south-facing window or supplemental grow lights are necessary to prevent the plant from etiolating and losing its natural color palette.

Proper soil management is critical; the substrate must be highly porous and inorganic-based. A mix consisting of coarse sand, pumice, and minimal peat is standard for commercial cultivation to ensure rapid drainage and air circulation around the root system.

Temperature requirements reflect the plant's Mexican origins, favoring warm days between 20 and 26 degrees Celsius. During the winter dormancy phase, temperatures should be lowered to 10-15 degrees Celsius to trigger the plant's metabolic slowing.
