Description
Growing requirements
The scaly-footed wood fern (Dryopteris lepidopoda) belongs to the Dryopteridaceae family. This perennial herbaceous plant is native to the mountain forests of East Asia, widely distributed across regions in China, Japan, and Taiwan.
To ensure healthy growth, this crop requires shaded or semi-shaded environments. Exposure to intense direct sunlight can scorch the delicate fronds, so planting under tree canopies or on the north side of garden structures is highly recommended.
The plant thrives in loose, fertile, and consistently moist soils that are rich in organic matter. A slightly acidic soil pH is ideal, mimicking the natural conditions of a forest floor where organic decomposition occurs continuously.
Regarding climate, the fern exhibits moderate frost tolerance. In areas with cold winters, it is essential to apply a layer of mulch, such as peat or fallen leaves, around the crown to protect the root system from severe frost damage.
Proper drainage is a fundamental requirement for successful cultivation. While the species enjoys constant humidity, standing water around the rhizomes must be avoided to prevent root rot and other moisture-related pathologies.
