Propagation is typically achieved through the division of tuberous roots. Planting in open ground should only occur once the risk of spring frost has completely passed and the soil has warmed to at least 12-15 degrees Celsius.

For those interested in breeding or growing annual cultivars, seeds are sown indoors in containers during March or April. This ensures the plants are well-established before transplanting outdoors.

Pre-planting preparation involves forcing the tubers in a warm, bright room for about two weeks. This helps stimulate eye growth and ensures a faster transition to the flowering stage once planted outside.

Spacing depends on the variety's growth habit. Small-growing dahlias should be planted about 40 cm apart, while taller, more robust varieties require up to 80 cm to allow for proper airflow and light penetration.

Growing requirements

Dahlias are sun-loving plants that thrive in full sunlight. Choosing a site with at least six to eight hours of direct sun per day is essential for producing high-quality, vibrant flowers and strong stems.

The soil should be fertile, loose, and well-drained. Dahlias dislike heavy, waterlogged soils, which can lead to tuber rot. If the soil is heavy, incorporating organic matter or building raised beds is recommended.

Consistent moisture is key during the growing season. While dahlias need regular watering, they should not be kept constantly saturated. A deep soak once or twice a week is usually better than frequent light misting.

Fertilization should be balanced. Early in the season, a balanced fertilizer is beneficial for vegetative growth. As the plant begins to form buds, switching to a low-nitrogen, high-potassium formula encourages prolific blooming.

Staking is an important aspect of dahlia care, especially for taller varieties. Providing sturdy support protects the heavy blooms and stems from damage caused by strong winds or heavy rain.

Main diseases and pests

Aphids, thrips, and spider mites are the most common pests that afflict dahlias. These sap-sucking insects can cause stunted growth and transmit viral diseases, necessitating the use of targeted insecticidal soaps or oils.

Gray mold, also known as Botrytis, is a frequent issue during cool, wet weather. It typically targets the flowers and leaves. To mitigate this, ensure plants have sufficient space and remove any infected foliage promptly.

Powdery mildew appears as a white, dusty coating on leaves, particularly toward the end of the summer season. Improving air circulation around the base of the plant is the best preventive measure.

Root rot, caused by poor soil drainage or overwatering, is a serious threat to tuber health. Once a tuber is infected with rot, it is often difficult to save, making preventive care and soil management crucial.

Slugs and snails can be particularly destructive to young dahlia shoots in the spring. Using physical barriers like copper tape or environmentally safe bait can effectively protect the plants during their early development.

Harvesting

The harvesting of dahlia tubers takes place in late autumn after the first hard frost has blackened the foliage. This process signals that the plant has entered dormancy and is ready for winter storage.

Stems should be cut back to roughly 10-15 cm above the crown. Using clean, sanitized tools is important to prevent the spread of pathogens into the tuberous root system during the cutting process.

After lifting the tubers from the ground, they must be gently cleaned of excess soil and allowed to dry in a cool, shaded area for several days. Proper drying helps "cure" the skin and prevents rot during storage.

Storage should be conducted in a cool, dark, and frost-free environment, with temperatures held between 3 and 6 degrees Celsius. Placing the tubers in crates with peat moss or vermiculite prevents them from dehydrating.

Monitoring the stored tubers throughout the winter is vital. Check for any signs of mold or shriveling, and immediately remove or treat any damaged sections to protect the rest of the collection.
