Description

Growing requirements

Cryptocoryne undulata is a robust perennial plant belonging to the Araceae family. Native to the freshwater ecosystems of Sri Lanka, it thrives in slow-moving streams and shaded riverbanks, adapting well to various submerged or semi-emerged conditions in cultivation.

The plant features distinct lanceolate leaves with undulating margins, often displaying attractive green, bronze, or marbled patterns. It develops a vigorous rhizome system that acts as a storage organ and the primary point of nutrient absorption from the substrate.

For successful growth, this species requires a nutrient-rich substrate and stable water parameters. It flourishes in temperatures ranging from 22°C to 28°C and prefers slightly acidic to neutral water conditions, showing a high tolerance for varying degrees of light intensity.

Effective agrotechnical practices include the application of root-tab fertilizers during the vegetative stage to promote density and foliage health. Frequent pruning of older, damaged leaves is recommended to encourage the production of vigorous new runners and offshoots.

In terms of хозяйственное usage, Cryptocoryne undulata is highly valued in the aquarium industry. It serves as a key ornamental species in aquascaping, providing structural depth and natural aesthetics to freshwater setups, making it a staple crop for aquatic plant nurseries.

Main diseases and pests

The most significant challenge for growers is the phenomenon known as 'Crypt melt' or cryptocoryne disease. This physiological collapse of leaf tissue is primarily triggered by sudden changes in water chemistry, light duration, or substrate disturbance, necessitating careful environmental management.
