Growing requirements
Cryptocoryne pygmaea is a member of the Araceae family, native to the Philippines, specifically found on the island of Palawan. It is a rare, small-growing species highly valued by aquatic enthusiasts for its distinct appearance.
In its natural habitat, this plant thrives along the banks of flowing streams and rivers, often remaining partially or fully submerged throughout the year. It adapts well to aquatic environments provided that stability is maintained.
The ideal cultivation requirements include a water temperature ranging between 22°C and 26°C. The plant prefers slightly acidic to neutral water parameters (pH 6.5–7.5) and moderate water hardness.
A nutrient-rich substrate is essential for the development of its root system, as this species derives a significant portion of its nutrition from the soil. It is recommended to use fine-grained gravel or specialized aquatic soil.
Maintenance involves providing adequate lighting and avoiding frequent disturbance of the roots. Sudden changes in environmental factors can trigger the loss of leaves, a phenomenon commonly known as crypt melt among hobbyists.
