Calibrachoa (Calibrachoa caesia x C. missionica) is a perennial member of the Solanaceae family, commonly grown as an annual in horticultural practice. Often confused with petunias, this plant is distinct due to its smaller, funnel-shaped blooms and a semi-woody branching habit that allows it to form dense, trailing cascades.

Originating from South America, particularly regions of Brazil, the plant is adapted to high light intensity. In agricultural production, providing sufficient sunlight is essential to maintain plant vigor and prevent the stems from becoming leggy, which significantly reduces the quality of the flowering display.

The substrate requirement for Calibrachoa is precise; it needs a well-draining, slightly acidic medium with a pH range of 5.5 to 6.5. High levels of organic matter are beneficial, provided that the porosity allows for rapid water drainage to prevent oxygen starvation at the root zone.

Irrigation management is the cornerstone of Calibrachoa cultivation. The plants are highly susceptible to root rot if kept consistently wet. Therefore, a "dry-down" period between irrigation cycles is necessary to encourage healthy root expansion and overall plant resilience.

The plant requires a high-fertility program during the growing season. Because of the rapid growth and continuous blooming, consistent feeding with balanced N-P-K fertilizers, supplemented with iron chelates to prevent chlorosis, is required to maintain leaf color and flower output.

Main diseases and pests

Common pests affecting Calibrachoa include aphids, whiteflies, and spider mites. These insects thrive in warm, sheltered environments and can rapidly deplete plant vigor. Integrated pest management (IPM) protocols, including the use of biological controls, are highly recommended.

Fungal pathogens such as Phytophthora and Pythium pose a severe threat, primarily when irrigation management is poor. These pathogens cause sudden wilting and death of the root system, often occurring within a few days of improper watering practices.

Powdery mildew can emerge in environments with high humidity and poor air circulation. To mitigate this risk, maintaining adequate spacing between individual plants and ensuring a steady flow of fresh air is critical to prevent the colonization of fungal spores on the foliage.

Nutritional disorders, specifically iron deficiency chlorosis, are common even when fertilizers are applied. This is often an issue of pH drift in the soil; if the pH rises above 6.5, the iron becomes unavailable to the roots, necessitating immediate corrective acidification of the substrate.

Sanitation is a vital component of disease control in Calibrachoa production. Removing dead leaves, spent flowers, and debris from the base of the plant prevents the accumulation of inoculum, keeping the environment clean and reducing the likelihood of secondary infection outbreaks.
