Calibrachoa is a genus of perennial herbaceous plants and subshrubs belonging to the Solanaceae family. Originating from South America, specifically regions in Brazil, Uruguay, and Argentina, these plants have adapted to warm climates and sunny habitats.

In commercial agriculture, the primary propagation method is vegetative cuttings. This technique is essential for maintaining the genetic purity and desired floral traits of modern hybrid cultivars that do not breed true from seeds.

Seed propagation is possible but demanding, requiring high light intensity and precise temperature control (22–24 degrees Celsius) during the germination stage. Seeds should be surface-sown as they require light to germinate effectively.

The seedling stage typically lasts between 10 to 14 weeks before the plant is robust enough for transplanting into permanent containers. During this period, consistent moisture and nutrient management are critical for developing a strong root architecture.

Transplanting into the final growing site should only occur after the risk of frost has completely passed. Calibrachoa thrives in warm weather and can suffer physiological stress if exposed to temperatures consistently below 7 degrees Celsius.

Growing requirements

Calibrachoa requires specific soil conditions, with an acidic pH range of 5.5 to 5.8 being optimal. Higher pH levels interfere with iron uptake, leading to severe leaf chlorosis, which significantly reduces the plant's aesthetic value and overall health.

Full sun exposure is a mandatory requirement for healthy development. While the plant can survive in partial shade, it will produce fewer flowers, exhibit leggy growth, and become more susceptible to fungal infections due to slower evaporation.

A sophisticated watering regimen is necessary to prevent root rot, which is the most common cause of failure in Calibrachoa cultivation. The growing medium must remain moist but well-aerated, requiring a pot with excellent drainage capabilities.

Balanced fertilization with an emphasis on micronutrients, particularly chelated iron, is vital. Given the rapid growth rate of these plants, they deplete soil nutrients quickly and respond well to regular liquid feeding throughout the season.

Routine pinching of the growing tips is highly recommended to encourage lateral branching. This horticultural practice ensures the plant maintains a dense, mounded shape, resulting in a more abundant and visually appealing floral display.

Main diseases and pests

Root rot, often caused by pathogens like Pythium or Phytophthora, is the primary threat to the crop. It is typically triggered by prolonged overwatering or poor drainage, leading to the rapid decay of the root system.

Aphids, whiteflies, and spider mites are the most common pests that affect Calibrachoa. They can cause stunted growth, leaf curling, and overall decline, often serving as vectors for viral diseases that are incurable in infected plants.

Powdery mildew can become a significant issue in environments with high humidity and stagnant air. Proper spacing and airflow are the best cultural controls to prevent the development of this fungal pathogen on the foliage.

Physiological chlorosis is frequently observed when the irrigation water quality is poor or the substrate pH is too high. Supplementing with iron chelates and adjusting the irrigation water alkalinity can effectively mitigate this problem.

An integrated pest management approach, including regular scouting and early intervention with systemic insecticides or fungicides, is the most effective way to protect the crop and ensure a successful harvest of decorative flowers.
