Sowing dates
Ohara fleabane, a natural hybrid complex, is propagated primarily by seeds or vegetative division of the rhizomes. The optimal time for sowing seeds is early spring when soil temperatures stabilize at +12 to +15 degrees Celsius.
When using the seedling method, sowing is carried out in March in a light substrate, followed by picking. Young plants are transplanted into open ground only after the threat of night frosts has passed, ensuring sufficient space between bushes for proper ventilation.
Vegetative propagation is performed by dividing the bush in early spring or early autumn. This method preserves varietal traits and accelerates the formation of a dense decorative clump in the landscape.
Seeds require stratification for 30–45 days at low temperatures, which significantly improves germination. Surface sowing without deep covering facilitates faster sprouting under conditions of sufficient light.
The crop is characterized by a slow growth rate in the first year of life; therefore, it is essential to ensure that the area is kept free of weeds during the initial stages to avoid competition.
Growing requirements
Ohara fleabane belongs to the Asteraceae family and is an endemic plant of the coastal rocky regions of East Asia. The plant is adapted to harsh conditions, so it requires sites with intense sunlight and excellent soil drainage.
The crop has moderate soil requirements, preferring loose, sandy, or rocky substrates with a neutral to slightly alkaline reaction. Heavy clay soils are unsuitable due to the risk of root system waterlogging.
The plant is highly drought-tolerant, but it requires regular watering during the active budding phase. Excessive moisture in the soil is a critical factor that promotes rot and plant death.
For normal development, the fleabane requires spaces with active air movement. It is extremely sensitive to stagnant, humid air, so dense planting in low-lying areas or locations with poor circulation is not recommended.
Mineral fertilization should be applied sparingly, mainly at the beginning of the growth phase. An excess of nitrogen leads to excessive vegetative growth at the expense of decorative flowering, which is the primary value of the species.
Main diseases and pests
The main threats to the crop include fungal diseases such as powdery mildew and fusarium wilt. These appear during sharp fluctuations in air humidity and waterlogging of the root zone.
Among pests, aphids and spider mites cause the most significant damage, as they actively colonize young terminal shoots. Upon detecting the first signs of infestation, treatment with systemic insecticides should be applied.
Slugs and snails can damage tender young leaves in the spring. Barrier protection methods or the application of specialized granular molluscicides around the bushes are recommended.
In rainy summer conditions, there is an increased risk of gray mold on the inflorescences. Timely removal of faded flower heads helps lower the infection load and improves the aesthetic appearance of the planting.
Disease prevention consists of maintaining a proper watering regime, keeping the area clean, and regular soil loosening, which prevents the creation of favorable environments for pathogens.
Harvesting
The flowering period of Ohara fleabane occurs in late summer and autumn. Cutting inflorescences for bouquets or drying is best done when the flowers have fully opened, preferably in the morning after dew has evaporated.
For ornamental purposes, it is recommended to remove wilted inflorescences in a timely manner. This stimulates the plant to produce new buds and prevents uncontrolled self-seeding, which can exhaust the bush.
Seed material is harvested as the flower heads darken. It is crucial to wait for full seed maturation on the parent plant, as immature seeds have extremely low germination energy.
Winter preparation is completed by pruning the above-ground part of the plant after the onset of steady cold weather. Stumps 5-10 centimeters high should be left to protect the root crown from freezing during snowless winters.
In regions with severe winters, a light covering of dry leaves or spruce branches is recommended. This prevents temperature fluctuations that can negatively affect the root system during the off-season.
