The ghost horntail (Urocerus fantoma) is a wood-boring insect belonging to the family Siricidae, order Hymenoptera. Adult females are characterized by a cylindrical body and a prominent ovipositor on the abdomen.

The insect typically has a dark appearance, sometimes featuring yellow markings. The size of adults can vary, but they are generally substantial, designed for powerful flight and navigation within dense forest habitats.

Larvae are white, legless, and possess strong, chitinous mouthparts. They are specialized for tunneling deep into the xylem of trees, where they spend the majority of their development cycle.

The ovipositor of the female is a precise tool used to penetrate the bark and wood, allowing the insect to deposit eggs deep into the tree's vascular system, ensuring the larvae have an immediate food source.

Proper identification usually requires looking at the morphological traits of the adult female, specifically the length of the ovipositor and the wing venation patterns characteristic of the genus Urocerus.

What it damages

The ghost horntail is primarily a secondary pest, targeting stressed, weakened, or freshly felled coniferous trees. It is rarely a primary cause of death for healthy, vigorous trees.

Target species include fir, spruce, and pine. In forestry, trees suffering from drought or fungal diseases are particularly susceptible to infestation by this species.

Larval tunnels are long and winding, significantly degrading the timber quality. These tunnels are filled with tightly packed frass, which compromises the structural integrity of the wood.

As the female deposits eggs, she introduces specific fungal spores into the wood. This symbiotic fungus helps digest the wood for the larvae but also accelerates tree decay and rotting.

In industrial settings, high infestation rates can lead to significant economic loss, as affected logs may be rejected or heavily discounted due to internal galleries and rot.

When it appears

The flight period for adult ghost horntails occurs during the warmer summer months, typically peaking in June and July when climatic conditions are optimal for mating.

The life cycle is often extended, taking one to three years depending on the wood moisture content and environmental temperatures. This long developmental period makes eradication difficult.

Overwintering occurs at the larval stage deep within the host tree's heartwood. This protects the insects from freezing temperatures and provides a stable, protected environment.

Pupation takes place inside the wood gallery near the surface. Upon reaching adulthood, the insect chews its way out through the bark, leaving a distinctive exit hole.

The emergence of adults is synchronized with the summer, ensuring that females can locate suitable host material for the next generation's oviposition.

Signs of infestation

The most visible indicator of an infestation is the presence of perfectly circular exit holes on the bark, approximately 5–8 mm in diameter, left by emerging adults.

Fine, powdery frass or sawdust collecting in crevices of the bark or around the base of the tree is a strong sign of active internal larval feeding.

Trees may appear healthy from the outside even while being significantly damaged internally. However, advanced infestations often correlate with thinning canopies or needle discoloration.

Small, deep pin-prick marks on the bark are evidence of female oviposition, though these are often difficult to spot without careful inspection of raw timber.

In forests, woodpecker activity on coniferous stems can be a secondary indicator, as birds often drill into the wood to prey on larvae developed within the trunk.

Control measures

Sanitation is the most critical management strategy. Removing and processing infested trees before the adult insects emerge is the only way to stop the spread.

Proper forest hygiene, including the prompt removal of slash and logging debris, prevents the buildup of local horntail populations in the forest environment.

Debarking logs at timber yards is a highly effective mechanical method to prevent females from finding suitable sites to lay their eggs.

Maintaining high stand density and tree vigor through appropriate silvicultural practices is the best long-term strategy for preventing attacks.
