How to identify
The wheat nematode (Anguina tritici) belongs to the phylum Nematoda, class Secernentea, and order Tylenchida. It is a highly specialized plant-parasitic nematode that specifically targets wheat and some other cereals.
Adult worms are thread-like, measuring about 3-5 mm in length. They possess a delicate stylet used to puncture plant cells and ingest nutrients from the host's vascular system.
A distinctive biological feature is the ability of second-stage juveniles to enter a state of dormancy. Inside seed galls, they can remain viable in dry conditions for up to 10 years, waiting for favorable moisture.
Upon hydration, juveniles emerge from the galls and migrate to the seedlings of the host plant. They enter the leaf sheaths and travel to the growing point of the plant.
The entire development cycle is closely synchronized with the development of the wheat plant, specifically the transformation of the floral buds into galls instead of grain.
What it damages
Wheat is the primary host for Anguina tritici, though it can occasionally affect rye and triticale. The parasite causes direct damage to the reproductive structures of the plant.
The most significant symptom is the formation of galls, which are hard, dark, and gall-like structures that replace the normal wheat kernel. These galls are filled with thousands of dormant larvae.
The economic impact is double-edged: it causes significant yield loss due to grain replacement and reduces the market quality and nutritional value of the harvested product.
Heavy infestations can lead to stunted plant growth, twisted or crinkled leaves, and failure of the wheat head to fully emerge from the leaf sheath.
The dissemination of the nematode is mainly facilitated by contaminated seed lots, where infected galls are mixed with healthy grain during the harvest process.
Signs of infestation
Visual identification in the field usually occurs during the booting and heading stages. Infected plants often exhibit irregular growth patterns and stunted stems.
Leaf symptoms include curling, twisting, and a wavy appearance. The plant may appear generally yellowed or chlorotic compared to the healthy sections of the crop.
The presence of galls is the definitive sign. These structures are often shorter and thicker than normal grains, dark brown to black in color, and can be easily crushed to reveal internal larvae.
Infected heads may remain green longer than healthy ones. They often look distorted, and when harvested, the galls are easily visible within the grain threshed from the field.
Field patches with stunted, deformed wheat plants serve as a primary indicator of nematode presence, warranting an immediate inspection of the seed quality.
Control measures
The most effective strategy is the use of high-quality, certified, and gall-free seed. Cleaning seed lots using air-screen or gravity separators effectively removes the lighter nematode galls.
Crop rotation is crucial for integrated pest management. Planting non-host crops for 2-3 years effectively breaks the life cycle of the nematode by starving the larvae in the soil.
Deep plowing in the autumn helps to bury infested crop residues and fallen galls, ensuring that the larvae cannot emerge or reach the next season's wheat seedlings.
Maintaining optimal soil fertility and proper sowing dates helps crops establish rapidly, potentially reducing the vulnerability of seedlings to early nematode invasion.
Since chemical nematicides are generally not feasible for broad-acre wheat cultivation, sanitation and preventative agricultural practices remain the cornerstone of control.
