The soil rhabditid (Rhabditis terricola) belongs to the phylum Nematoda, order Rhabditida, and family Rhabditidae. These are microscopic worms that primarily live as saprobionts in the soil.
They appear as thread-like organisms, typically 1 to 2 mm in length, lacking significant pigmentation. Their body is smooth, transparent, and equipped with a specialized feeding apparatus for consuming organic matter.
The life cycle of this species is characterized by rapid generational turnover, especially under conditions of high humidity and the presence of decaying organic material.
They are highly mobile and move through soil capillaries following moisture gradients. Reproduction occurs sexually, with females depositing eggs directly into the substrate.
Identification is difficult due to their microscopic size; therefore, accurate diagnosis is only possible through laboratory analysis of soil samples under a microscope.
What it damages
This species usually acts as a secondary pest, colonizing plant tissues that have already been damaged by fungi, bacteria, or other primary pathogens.
The primary damage occurs when mass aggregations of nematodes gather in the root zone, accelerating the rotting process in vegetables and ornamental crops.
Affected parts are typically weakened tissues: potato tubers, onion bulbs, carrot roots, and other succulent plant organs found in the soil.
Nematodes not only mechanically destroy tissues but also act as vectors for pathogenic microorganisms, worsening the overall health of agricultural crops.
As a result of this damage, the root system's absorption capacity is impaired, leading to stunted growth, leaf chlorosis, and the eventual death of the affected plant part.
Signs of infestation
Visual signs of infestation are often masked by the general appearance of root rots. The plant begins to lag in growth without any visible cause on the surface.
When examining underground parts, areas of softened, darkened tissue with a distinct rotting odor are found, which are heavily colonized by microscopic worms.

The leaf blade may take on a yellowish tint, and in advanced cases, plants can be easily pulled from the soil due to the destruction of the root mass.
