How to identify
Rhabditis monohystera belongs to the phylum Nematoda, order Rhabditida, and family Rhabditidae. This is a microscopic worm that exhibits the elongated body shape typical of rhabditids.
Adult individuals are transparent or whitish and lack distinct pigmentation. Their body length ranges from 0.5 to 1.5 mm, making them extremely difficult to detect in soil substrates without magnification.
The biology of this species is closely linked to the presence of organic matter in the soil. While they are primarily saprobionts, they can transition to facultative parasitism under conditions of waterlogging and high concentrations of decaying organic matter.
The life cycle consists of an egg stage, four larval stages, and an adult stage. Under unfavorable conditions, these nematodes can form desiccation-resistant larvae known as dauer larvae.
Reproduction occurs in the soil or within the tissues of decaying plants, allowing for rapid population growth whenever a suitable nutritional substrate is available.
What it damages
This nematode primarily attacks vegetable crops, including tomatoes, potatoes, cucumbers, and other plants susceptible to root rot diseases.
The pest often targets weakened plants that have already sustained damage to their root systems from fungal or bacterial pathogens.
Damage occurs as the nematodes accelerate tissue decomposition by feeding on bacteria and decay products, subsequently invading living root tissues through existing wounds.
Mass reproduction of the pest leads to stunted growth and reduced crop yields due to the extensive destruction of fine root hairs.
In greenhouse settings, the risk of infestation increases significantly when using non-sterile soil or applying excessive amounts of uncomposted organic fertilizers.
Signs of infestation
A primary sign of nematode infestation is the appearance of wilting patches that do not recover even after proper irrigation.
The root system of infected plants often appears slimy, emits a foul, putrid odor, and develops a brownish discoloration.
Under microscopic examination, sections of roots or stems may reveal active accumulations of small, worm-like organisms.
The presence of the pest is frequently accompanied by secondary infections, which often mask the symptoms of nematode infestation as simple root rot.
Poor seedling establishment and early-stage crop failure are often linked to high concentrations of rhabditids in the root zone.
Control measures
The primary control method is agronomic: the use of sterile or disinfected soil mixtures within greenhouse environments.
It is essential to avoid soil waterlogging and water stagnation, as moist environments provide the most favorable conditions for Rhabditis monohystera development.
Prompt removal of plant debris is crucial, as these residues serve as the primary breeding grounds and population reservoirs for the nematode.
Implementing strict crop rotation, with at least a 3-4 year interval before returning specific crops to the same plot, helps break the parasite's life cycle.
In cases of severe infestation, chemical or biological nematicides approved for use on specific crops during the growing season should be applied.
