The silky longhorn beetle (Hesperophanes sericeus) is a wood-boring insect belonging to the family Cerambycidae, commonly known as long-horned beetles.
Adult beetles typically measure between 15 and 25 millimeters in length. Their bodies are elongated and vary in color from reddish-brown to dark brown.
The name "silky" refers to the fine, dense hairs covering their elytra (wing covers), which give the insect a soft, lustrous appearance under direct light.
They possess antennae that reach mid-body length, which are highly sensitive to environmental cues. As nocturnal insects, they are most active during the night.
The larvae are white, legless, and feature hardened mandibles designed for excavating deep tunnels into woody substrates, completing their development inside the host tree.
What it damages

In very quiet environments, one might hear the faint gnawing or crunching sounds of larvae working through the wood, confirming an active and severe infestation.
