How to identify

The coffee lace bug (Habrochila ghesquierei) is a Hemipteran insect belonging to the family Tingidae. Its common name is derived from the intricate, lace-like appearance of its wing covers (hemelytra).

Adults are small, flattened insects with characteristic wing patterns. They are usually tan or brownish, blending in well with the lower surfaces of coffee leaves where they primarily reside.

The life cycle includes eggs, five nymphal instars, and adults. Nymphs resemble miniature versions of the adults but lack developed wings and often feature small spines for defense against predators.

These insects are highly specialized, targeting plants within the Rubiaceae family, specifically coffee trees (Coffea spp.). They thrive in tropical climates where consistent host availability supports overlapping generations.

Colonial behavior is a hallmark of this species, as they tend to cluster in groups to feed on the underside of leaves, often staying stationary for long periods.

What it damages

The primary hosts for the coffee lace bug are Arabica and Robusta coffee trees. Both adults and nymphs feed by piercing the leaf tissue with their specialized mouthparts to extract plant sap.

Feeding damage prevents normal plant development and disrupts photosynthesis, which is critical for bean quality and tree health. This results in significant loss of plant vigor.

As the insects feed, they introduce saliva into the leaf tissue, leading to localized chlorosis and cellular damage. This reduces the leaf's ability to produce energy through photosynthesis.

In cases of heavy infestation, the tree suffers from premature leaf senescence and defoliation. This not only stunts growth but also exposes the branches to sunscald and other environmental stressors.

Reduced yield is the inevitable consequence of high population levels, as the trees struggle to support fruit development when their foliage is severely compromised by feeding colonies.

Signs of infestation

The earliest symptom of lace bug activity is the appearance of tiny yellow or white spots on the upper leaf surface, corresponding to the feeding sites on the underside.

Close inspection of the underside of the leaves reveals the presence of adult bugs, nymphs, and their cast-off exoskeletons. These look like tiny, translucent flakes attached to the leaf veins.

Affected leaves eventually curl, turn brown, and become brittle. The overall appearance of the plant becomes sparse and yellowed, contrasting with the dark green of a healthy tree.

Black sooty mold often develops on the leaves in response to the insect's excrement (honeydew), further blocking sunlight and interfering with the tree's health.

Severe defoliation is a clear indicator that the population has peaked, and immediate intervention is required to save the remaining canopy of the coffee trees.

Control measures

Cultural control practices include pruning and thinning the coffee canopy to increase sunlight penetration and air circulation, which naturally discourages lace bug colonization.

Keeping the surrounding area free of weeds is crucial, as some alternative hosts can harbor populations during periods when coffee leaves are less available.

Biological control, using entomopathogenic fungi like Beauveria bassiana, has proven effective in controlling nymphs and adults while maintaining the ecological balance of the plantation.

Chemical control should be used as a last resort, utilizing selective insecticides that have minimal impact on beneficial predatory insects inhabiting the coffee ecosystem.
