In global agriculture, they are primarily known as pests of tropical and subtropical vegetation. In regions with colder climates, they are often problematic pests in greenhouses and indoor plant collections.
The biology of these pests is characterized by incomplete metamorphosis, consisting of egg, nymph, and adult stages. Females lay eggs either in the soil or directly on host plants. These eggs are often highly resistant to environmental stressors, allowing the population to persist even after insecticidal treatments.
The damage is caused by both nymphs and adults feeding on foliage. They consume leaf margins or entire blades, which can lead to rapid defoliation of the host plant. This intense feeding reduces the plant's photosynthetic capacity, resulting in weakened growth, yield loss, and potential plant mortality.
