While shrikes are not typical agricultural pests that consume leaves or roots, they can negatively impact orchards through their nesting and hunting behaviors. The primary issue is the physical damage to branches and stems when birds use thorns or stiff twigs on fruit trees to impale their prey, creating what ornithologists call "larders."

The biological cycle of shrikes involves high territoriality and the constant need to secure prey. By using trees as larders, they cause small lacerations in the bark and shoots of fruit-bearing plants. These open wounds serve as entry points for pathogens, fungi, and bacteria, which can lead to localized branch dieback or disease outbreaks in sensitive fruit varieties.

Their impact on the agro-ecosystem is complex; while they hunt insect pests, they also prey on beneficial pollinators and predatory insects. In some cases, if the insect population is low, they may disturb fruit development by nesting in the canopy or damaging fruit tissues while foraging for smaller creatures hiding within the foliage.

Managing shrike activity in commercial orchards requires a balance between pest management and environmental preservation. Effective strategies include:

  • Installing bird-scaring devices such as predatory bird kites or holographic tapes.
  • Utilizing bio-acoustic deterrents that mimic alarm calls.
  • Applying physical exclusion netting over high-value crops.
