The family Cobitidae, commonly known as loaches, belongs to the order Cypriniformes. These bottom-dwelling fish are often found in stagnant or slow-moving water bodies, including agricultural irrigation networks, drainage canals, and flooded rice paddies, which occasionally places them in conflict with agricultural infrastructure maintenance.

While loaches are not primary plant pests, they cause agronomic concerns in aquatic farming systems. Their burrowing behavior into the sediment leads to increased turbidity, which can inhibit the growth of certain aquatic vegetation and interfere with the delicate oxygenation processes required by young rice crops during the initial establishment phase.

The biology of Cobitidae is characterized by high tolerance for low oxygen levels, allowing them to thrive in muddy, poorly ventilated water environments. Their life cycle is closely linked to submerged vegetation, where they deposit eggs during the spawning season, often coinciding with the early irrigation cycles in agricultural fields.

Economic damage is primarily indirect. Persistent activity at the base of irrigation dams or levees can contribute to structural erosion. Additionally, large populations can disturb the sediment layer to such an extent that it interferes with nutrient cycling in the water column, potentially hindering crop nutrient uptake efficiency in wet-field cultivation.

Integrated management measures for controlling loaches in agricultural water systems include:

  • Installation of fine-mesh screens on intake pipes to prevent entry;
  • Routine maintenance and dredging of irrigation canals to remove excessive silt;
  • Managed drying of rice fields to disrupt the lifecycle of aquatic organisms;
  • Biological control by encouraging the presence of native predatory fish species.
