Systematic position: Kermesidae is a family of scale insects within the order Hemiptera, superfamily Coccoidea. Known commonly as gall-like scale insects, they are recognized by their distinct morphology, where the adult females often resemble small, spherical, gall-like structures on the bark or branches of their host plants, making them difficult to detect.

Host plants: These insects are highly host-specific, primarily infesting various species of oak (Quercus). While they are typically found on mature trees, they can also cause significant damage to nursery stock and ornamental oaks in urban landscapes, parks, and silvicultural environments where oaks are grown for timber or aesthetic value.
Biology and life cycle: Kermesidae typically have one generation per year. The life cycle involves egg, nymphal stages, and adult stages. The most critical phase for dispersal is the 'crawler' stage (first-instar nymphs), which are mobile and can be carried by wind or animals to new branches. Once they find a suitable feeding site, they insert their mouthparts into the tree tissue and remain sedentary for the rest of their lives.
Damage and economic significance: The insects feed by sucking phloem sap from the twigs and bark of the host tree. This feeding process deprives the tree of essential nutrients, leading to stunted growth, yellowing of leaves (chlorosis), and twig dieback. Heavy infestations can weaken the tree's defense mechanisms, making it more susceptible to secondary attacks by wood-boring insects or fungal pathogens.
Control measures: Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling Kermesidae. Control strategies include:
- Applying systemic insecticides during the crawler emergence period;
- Pruning and destroying heavily infested branches to reduce local population density;
- Encouraging natural predators such as lady beetles and parasitic wasps;
- Maintaining tree vigor through proper irrigation and soil nutrient management.
