Unlike many agricultural pests, flat bugs rarely target herbaceous crops. Their primary hosts are weakened forest, garden, and orchard trees. They colonize the trunks of both coniferous and deciduous species, frequently favoring trees that are already compromised by fungal infections or other wood-boring insects.

The biology of these insects is closely linked to the condition of the tree bark. Their development cycle includes egg, nymph, and adult stages. Both adults and nymphs feed on fungal mycelia growing within the wood, and sometimes on the tree sap. Overwintering typically occurs as adults or late-stage nymphs in their sheltered habitats beneath the bark.

The damage caused by flat bugs is related to their contribution to the decline of stressed trees. While they are often considered secondary pests, their mass aggregation accelerates the deterioration of the tree tissues. This process disrupts nutrient transport and makes the tree more susceptible to infestation by more destructive pests, such as bark beetles and wood borers.

Management and control strategies focus on maintaining the overall health and vigor of forest stands and orchards. Key measures include:
