Systematically, they are classified under the order Hymenoptera, suborder Apocrita. There are tens of thousands of species, many of which are highly host-specific. Adult wasps generally feed on nectar, honeydew, or the hemolymph of their hosts, meaning they do not consume plant tissues and are entirely harmless to your crops.
