Taxonomically, they belong to the order Vetigastropoda and the family Fissurellidae. These mollusks are characterized by a conical shell with an apical hole. While they are not traditional field pests, their presence in water supply lines presents a unique technical challenge for modern agriculture.

The life cycle involves a planktonic larval stage known as a veliger. These larvae are highly dispersive and can easily enter agricultural water systems through intake valves. Once inside, they settle on surfaces, growing into adults that physically obstruct the internal diameter of pipes and irrigation nozzles.

The primary damage is the disruption of the fertigation process. By colonizing irrigation systems, they cause a significant reduction in water flow, clog filters, and can potentially introduce bio-contaminants. While they do not directly feed on leaves, the resulting plant stress due to irregular irrigation is a major concern.

Protection and control measures focus on mechanical exclusion. The implementation of high-efficiency water filtration systems, routine pressure washing of pipes, and UV treatment of influent water are recommended. Chemical eradication is rarely recommended due to the delicate balance of recirculating hydroponic solutions.

  • Install multi-stage mesh filters at water inlets.
  • Implement periodic pipe flushing with high-pressure air or water.

  • Monitor pump pressure to detect early signs of infestation.
