Shore flies (family Ephydridae) are members of the order Diptera, commonly found in moist environments. While many species are harmless, those that infest greenhouse operations are considered significant pests. The biology of these insects is tied to aquatic or semi-aquatic habitats. Adults are capable fliers, often seen resting on moist surfaces or foliage. They feed on algae, bacteria, and decomposing organic matter. In a greenhouse setting, the presence of abundant algal growth provides an ideal breeding ground for the population to explode within a short period.

The life cycle involves egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Females lay eggs in moist, organic-rich substrates. The larvae develop through several instars, feeding on algae and microorganisms. Under optimal warm temperatures, the entire life cycle can be completed in approximately 10 to 14 days, leading to overlapping generations and continuous pressure on crops.

The primary damage caused by shore flies is generally indirect. While larvae primarily feed on algae, they can graze on the root hairs of seedlings and cuttings, causing mechanical injury. These wounds serve as entry points for plant pathogens like Pythium and Fusarium. Furthermore, adults act as mechanical vectors, moving spores and bacteria around the greenhouse.

Effective management requires a combination of sanitation and cultural practices:

  • Maintain proper greenhouse hygiene to eliminate algal mats.
  • Improve drainage to prevent standing water and wet spots.
  • Monitor adult populations using yellow sticky traps.
  • Apply biological controls such as predatory mites or entomopathogenic nematodes.
  • Avoid over-fertilization to minimize algae proliferation on the substrate surface.
