Depressaria hofmanni is a moth species belonging to the Depressariidae family. These insects are known as flat moths due to their extremely compressed body shape, which helps them hide in tight spaces during the day and in winter.
The adult moth is small, typically with a wingspan of 15 to 20 mm. Its forewings exhibit a cryptic brownish-grey coloration with irregular darker markings, providing excellent camouflage against soil surfaces, plant stems, and dead leaf litter.
The larvae, or caterpillars, represent the destructive stage of this insect. They change coloration as they grow, usually transitioning from a pale or yellowish hue to a darker mottled appearance, often featuring distinct sclerotized spots on their segments.
The biology of this species is strictly linked to plants in the Apiaceae family. The adults overwinter in sheltered locations, emerging in early spring to mate and lay eggs near the buds or on the leaves of their host plants.
Monitoring this pest is challenging because of their nocturnal activity and the larvae's tendency to conceal themselves within plant tissues or webbing, which provides physical protection against environmental stressors.
What it damages
Depressaria hofmanni larvae primarily target plants in the Apiaceae family, including economically important crops such as carrots, parsley, dill, caraway, and parsnips. They show a strong preference for the generative parts of the plants.
The most severe damage occurs on flower heads and umbels. The caterpillars consume the buds, flowers, and developing ovaries, which prevents the plant from setting seeds and leads to significant yield losses in seed production fields.
The presence of the pest is marked by the webbing of umbels. The larvae use silk to pull parts of the inflorescence together, creating a protected chamber where they feed. This behavior makes them difficult to reach with standard contact-based pest control methods.
Apart from the direct consumption of plant tissue, the presence of larval excrement and silk promotes the growth of opportunistic fungi, leading to further rotting and decay of the affected parts of the plant.

Chemical control should be timed to coincide with the early larval stages before they build their protective webs. Applying systemic insecticides during the peak of egg-hatching can significantly reduce the potential damage to the crops.
