How to identify

Anoplophora coeruleoantennata is a member of the Cerambycidae family, commonly known as longhorn beetles. The species is named after its distinct long antennae that exhibit a metallic blueish tint.

Adult beetles are relatively large, ranging from 25 to 40 mm in length. Their bodies are dark, often featuring light-colored spots on the elytra, providing effective camouflage against bark.

The life cycle is lengthy and tied to the development within host trees. Adult females use their robust mandibles to cut small slits into the bark to deposit their eggs.

Larvae are legless, fleshy, and yellowish-white with a darkened head capsule. They spend their entire development phase feeding deep within the sapwood and heartwood.

Pupation occurs inside the wood, in a chamber specifically prepared by the larva. Once mature, the adult emerges through a perfectly circular hole in the tree trunk.

What it damages

This beetle is a serious xylophagous pest, primarily targeting broadleaf deciduous trees. Common hosts include maples, poplars, willows, and various fruit-bearing species.

Both healthy and weakened trees are susceptible to infestation. The pest is particularly problematic in urban forestry and sensitive ecosystems where trees are difficult to replace.

The internal galleries created by the larvae disrupt the tree's vascular system, preventing the flow of water and nutrients from the roots to the canopy.

Severe infestation compromises the structural integrity of the tree, making it prone to breakage during high winds or heavy snow events in the dormant season.

Accumulated damage leads to crown dieback, branch failure, and ultimately the death of the host tree if the infestation is not managed in its early stages.

Signs of infestation

The most diagnostic sign of an infestation is the presence of perfectly round exit holes, approximately 10 mm in diameter, found on the trunks or large branches.

Frass, which resembles coarse sawdust or wood shavings, often accumulates at the base of the tree or within branch crotches as the larvae excavate their galleries.

Early-stage infestations may show oviposition scars on the bark, appearing as small, jagged slits where the female beetle has deposited her eggs.

Foliar symptoms include premature yellowing, wilting, and canopy thinning. These signs indicate that the tree's conductive tissues have been significantly compromised.

Peeling back the bark or using diagnostic tools often reveals internal galleries packed with excrement and wood particles, confirming the presence of the pest.

Control measures

Strict quarantine measures are the primary defense, as the movement of wood products is the most common pathway for the accidental spread of the beetle.

Early detection through systematic monitoring is crucial. Once a tree is found to be infested, it must be promptly removed and destroyed to prevent local spread.

Chemical control involving systemic insecticides may be applied in specific cases, though effectiveness is often limited by the pest's deep-dwelling nature.

Pheromone traps are used as part of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) to detect adult populations and time potential chemical interventions effectively.

Research into biological control agents, such as entomopathogenic fungi and parasitic wasps, continues, aiming to provide sustainable management solutions.
