Valsa canker is a serious fungal disease caused by the pathogen Valsa ceratosperma (often associated with Cytospora species). It is an ascomycete fungus that thrives as a facultative parasite, primarily attacking weakened or stressed woody plants. The fungus survives in dead bark and canker tissue, producing pycnidia that serve as the primary source of infection.

The life cycle of the pathogen is driven by environmental conditions. During wet weather, spores (conidia) are exuded from fruiting bodies and spread by splashing rain, wind, and insects. Infection occurs exclusively through wounds, such as pruning cuts, frost cracks, sunburns, or insect damage, which provide a direct entry point into the tree's vascular system.
Once inside, the mycelium colonizes the bark, cambium, and xylem tissues. The fungus produces enzymes that break down cell walls, leading to tissue necrosis. This disrupts the tree’s water and nutrient transport, which often results in the wilting and eventual death of the affected branch or the entire tree.
The severity of the disease is exacerbated by environmental stressors such as drought, nutrient deficiency, or improper site conditions. Trees that are not vigorous are unable to form an effective callus barrier to isolate the fungal infection, allowing it to spread rapidly throughout the trunk or scaffold branches.
Control of Valsa canker is challenging because once the fungus establishes itself deep within the wood, chemical treatments become less effective. Therefore, maintaining tree health and preventing mechanical injury to the bark remain the cornerstones of successful orchard management and disease prevention.
This pathogen has a wide host range among Rosaceae species, including apple, pear, peach, plum, and cherry trees. Young, newly planted trees are particularly vulnerable if they are not correctly watered or protected from environmental extremes.
Symptoms begin as depressed, discolored areas on the bark, which later turn reddish-brown or black. As the disease progresses, the bark becomes brittle and may crack, revealing the presence of tiny, pin-head-sized fruiting bodies (pycnidia) that distinguish Valsa from other types of bark necrosis.
Integrated management is essential: prune out all infected branches, cutting well into healthy tissue, and disinfect tools between cuts. Apply protective copper-based fungicides to pruning wounds. Ensure trees are well-watered and fertilized to maintain vigor, as healthy trees can naturally contain and overcome minor infections.
