The primary hosts for this pathogen are members of the Asteraceae family, particularly sunflowers. The fungus attacks stems, leaves, and flower heads, causing premature wilting and tissue necrosis.
In addition to sunflowers, the fungus can be found on various wild plants and weeds, which serve as reservoirs for the infection during the off-season. This wide host range allows the fungus to adapt successfully to various agro-climatic regions.
Symptoms of infection appear as dark, necrotic spots on the stems, which gradually enlarge and girdle the plant. At the site of infection, the epidermis is destroyed, and the stem structure is deformed, leading to brittleness and lodging.
