Diaporthe rudis is a species of ascomycete fungus within the Diaporthaceae family. It is a well-known plant pathogen that causes various necrotic diseases in woody plants and shrubs, often appearing as a complex pathogen in orchards.

Systematically, it is classified under the class Sordariomycetes. The organism exhibits a pleomorphic lifecycle, producing both asexual conidia in pycnidia (anamorph stage) and sexual ascospores in perithecia (teleomorph stage), which contributes to its survival.

What it damages

This pathogen has a wide host range, primarily affecting fruit crops like apples and pears, as well as grapevines. It targets bark, shoots, and fruit stems, leading to severe structural damage to the host plant tissues.

The damage caused by Diaporthe rudis manifests as bark necrosis and canker formation. By colonizing the cortical tissues, the fungus disrupts nutrient and water transport, eventually causing the dieback of branches and significantly weakening the host.

When it appears

The disease cycle is highly dependent on environmental moisture and temperature. Spore production and release are most active during wet spring weather, which provides the necessary conditions for infection of healthy plant tissues.

The pathogen overwinters as mycelium or dormant fruiting bodies in previously infected bark or plant debris. Once favorable conditions return, the inoculum serves as a primary source for the infection of new, developing shoots.

Signs of infestation

The primary visual symptoms include localized browning or dark lesions on the bark. As the disease progresses, these lesions can expand, causing longitudinal cracks and exposing the internal woody tissues to further infection.

Characteristic signs include the development of numerous, minute, dark-colored fruiting bodies (pycnidia) on the surface of the infected tissue. Under humid conditions, these pycnidia exude spore masses that are spread by rain splash and air currents.

Control measures

Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling Diaporthe rudis. This begins with rigorous sanitation practices, such as the pruning and immediate removal or burning of all infected branches to reduce the pathogen load.

Chemical control involving the timely application of fungicides is crucial during periods of high risk, especially after pruning operations. Maintaining orchard hygiene and plant vitality is the most effective long-term strategy for minimizing damage.
