Watermelon Gatinho

Consistent yields under high disease pressure

The “Gatinu” watermelon from the Dutch breeding company Rijk Zwaan is a reliable choice for farmers focused on predictable results. The main advantage of this hybrid lies in its strong genetic foundation: the plant possesses robust resistance to Fusarium wilt and anthracnose. In the context of modern commercial melon growing, where pathogens rapidly adapt to fungicides, having built-in immunity is a critical factor for reducing pesticide costs and ensuring marketable fruit yields.

Agronomic features and morphology

“Gatinu” produces round fruits with a classic vibrant red flesh, highly valued by consumers for its dense texture and excellent flavor profile. As a seeded hybrid, it is perfectly suited for standard field cultivation schemes. The round shape simplifies logistics and palletizing during transport, effectively minimizing the risk of mechanical damage.

Who is this hybrid for?

• For farms with challenging crop rotation: high resistance to Fusarium allows for minimized losses in fields where the soil infectious background remains consistently high.
• For demanding markets: the fruits maintain an attractive commercial appearance and stable flesh coloration even when transported over medium distances.
• For those who value Dutch breeding: Rijk Zwaan traditionally focuses on the balance between productivity and technical efficiency, and “Gatinu” fully adheres to this standard.

It is worth noting that despite its high disease resistance, this hybrid requires adherence to an optimal nutrition regime, especially during the active fruit-filling phase. Its greatest strength is predictability. Unlike less protected varieties, “Gatinu” does not require emergency treatments during critical development stages, making it an optimal solution for growers looking to mitigate risks and secure a stable gross harvest.
