Tomato Caras

Stable yields in protected ground

The «Karas» tomato, developed by breeders at the Institute of Vegetable and Melon Growing of NAAS, is a classic of Ukrainian selection, aimed at those who value predictability and reliability. In protected ground conditions, this determinate variety shows excellent results, forming a compact bush that does not require complex pruning.

Agronomic characteristics and yield potential

• Vegetation period: 90–100 days from full germination to the start of harvest.
• Fruit size: the variety shows weight variability — from compact 40–60g to larger specimens of 80–100g.
• Appearance: the classic round shape and rich red color make it a universal choice for whole-fruit canning and fresh consumption.

The main feature of «Karas» is its resilience. Unlike modern imported hybrids that require strict greenhouse conditions and precise microclimate control, this variety is forgiving of many technical errors. It is optimal for beginner farmers and backyard gardeners looking for an undemanding crop for greenhouses and plastic tunnels.

Strengths and weaknesses: Undeniable advantages include uniform ripening and high marketability of the fruits. The variety transports perfectly without losing its shape. However, it is worth noting that «Karas» is not a large-fruited beef tomato; therefore, if your goal is to produce massive fruits for a retail display, this variety might seem insufficiently large. Nevertheless, for processing and preservation, it remains one of the most balanced options in Ukrainian selection.
