Description Malcolm
Malcolm is an early-maturing sunflower hybrid characterized by high disease resistance, including resistance to downy mildew, as well as wide adaptability to various climatic conditions. It is drought- and heat-tolerant, making it suitable for cultivation in arid regions and under no-till technology. The hybrid is also resistant to lodging and overcrowding, allowing its use in late planting and variable seeding rates depending on moisture conditions. Malcolm’s yield potential reaches 50 centners per hectare, with oil content ranging from 49% to 52%.

A distinctive feature of this sunflower is its high oleic acid content — up to 95% — making it a high-oleic variety. This provides significant advantages over traditional oilseed crops, as the oil contains a high amount of natural antioxidants, including vitamin E. The high content of monounsaturated oleic acid (Omega-3) and low content of polyunsaturated linoleic acid (Omega-6) make the oil more beneficial for health. Additionally, frying and processing oil from this sunflower produce significantly fewer harmful trans fats, improving the quality of the final product.

Malcolm sunflower also features a seed storage life four times longer than conventional varieties. This allows its use not only for food purposes but also as raw material for biodiesel production, especially when grown under arid conditions. For successful cultivation, proper crop rotation and optimal plant nutrition — including nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and micronutrients — are recommended to enhance yield and seed quality.
