Safflower variety «Borets» – an oily seed, similar in appearance to sunflower, but possessing a characteristic bitter-sweet taste and floral aroma. The seeds are white in color, with a density of 96‑97 %, the mass of one seed is about 31–32 g, and from six to ten heads with a diameter of 2.3–2.5 cm are formed on one plant.
The nutritional value of safflower is high: the fat content in dry seeds is 38 %, of which linoleic acid predominates – 82.5 %, and oleic acid is only 8.8 %. Protein reaches 16.2 %, fiber – 17.6 %, and the total content of biologically available carbohydrates is 24.3 %. Due to such composition, oil from «Borets» seeds is suitable both for food use and for the production of meal.
Culinarily, safflower oil is distinguished by a neutral taste, which makes it a universal ingredient in dish preparation. In medicine, it is used due to the high content of unsaturated fatty acids: it helps improve blood sugar levels, has a diuretic and cholagogue effect, and also regulates thyroid gland function. In addition, oil is widely used in cosmetology as a moisturizing agent for dry facial skin.
Safflower «Borets» is recommended for athletes and those striving to lose weight: regular consumption contributes to a reduction in fat deposits and supports muscle mass gain. Seeds can also be used as feed for birds, and the plant – bushy, upright growth up to 60–65 cm, suitable for growing in various climatic conditions.
