Vesnyanka is a tetraploid winter rye (Secale cereale L.) variety, characterized by medium maturity and moderate winter hardiness. The plant is medium-height and lodging-resistant, with a 1000-grain weight ranging from 43 to 54 grams, ensuring good adaptation to various soil conditions. The variety is recommended for cultivation in regions such as Vologda, Kostroma, Leningrad, Bryansk, Ivanovo, Moscow, and Tula Oblasts, where it demonstrates stable yields ranging from 26.8 to 34.4 centners per hectare.
Vesnyanka exhibits satisfactory baking qualities, making it in demand for bread and bakery product manufacturing. The variety grows well on fertile soils with high humus content, such as in Bryansk Oblast, where humus levels reach 3–3.5%, significantly higher than in some other regions. High grain mass contributes to resistance against poor soils, but under calm weather conditions, heavy pollen may cause pollination problems, potentially leading to barrenness and partial infection by sporangia.
To enhance yield and improve grain-set in tetraploid varieties, including Vesnyanka, breeding programs are underway to increase grain-setting rates. This will help improve yield stability and quality under various climatic conditions. Vesnyanka is a reliable choice for farmers aiming to obtain high-quality and stable rye yields in moderate-climate regions with diverse soils.
