Rhodiola rosea is a perennial herbaceous plant of the Crassulaceae family, reaching a height of up to 50 cm and rhizomes weighing up to 2.5 kg. The root is covered with a thin cork, white on the cut surface, has an astringent taste and a scent reminiscent of roses. The plant prefers a moderate climate and grows on rocky soils of Siberia, the Far East, the Northern Urals, and the Altai mountains.
The chemical composition of rhodiola includes flavonoids (glucosides, quercetin), salsidrolide (rosidolide), tannins, essential oils, iron, oxalic acid, glycosides, and anthraquinones. These compounds give the plant antioxidant, tonifying, and detoxifying properties.
The benefits of rhodiola are manifested in increased mental and physical performance, improved memory and cognitive functions, as well as strengthening the immune system. The plant is used for fatigue, vegetative vascular dystonia, infectious diseases, arthritis, gout, hypotension, wounds, burns, flu, poisoning, and depressive disorders. In cosmetology, rhodiola helps slow down skin aging, smooth out wrinkles, and improve sensitive skin.
For application, the root is usually dried at a temperature of 50–60 °C and preserved for up to three years without loss of properties. Preparation of decoction: chopped dry root (1 tbsp.) is poured with a glass of hot water, heated on a water bath for 15 min., then infused for 45 min. Drink 3–4 times a day 30–40 minutes before meals with a teaspoon of honey. Tincture is also possible: dry root (50 g) is poured with vodka, infused for at least 30 days, and taken 30–40 drops three times a day.
Rhodiola rosea is valued as an adaptogen that promotes increased resistance to stress, improvement of the cardiovascular and nervous systems, as well as acceleration of wound healing. This plant has no analogues in the world and is grown exclusively in the Altai mountains and adjacent regions.
