Portulaca PRINCE'S RED CARPET

Practical insights on growing «Knyazhesky Kovrik Aly» (Prince’s Carpet Scarlet)

Selecting portulaca from the 'Kapris' farm, developed by Vyacheslav Vasilyevich Shepelev, is a choice for those who value both aesthetic cover and medicinal utility. The «Knyazhesky Kovrik Aly» variety is characterized by its robust green foliage, which acts as a dense foundation for its later scarlet blooms. Based on operational experience, success with this variety heavily depends on site selection—avoid shaded areas, as the carpet density will significantly decrease without direct sunlight.

Cultivation and Maintenance Guidelines

• Soil and Moisture Management: This variety thrives in well-draining, sandy soils. The main maintenance challenge is avoiding waterlogging, which is detrimental to the fleshy stems. Ensuring proper drainage is the most effective way to prevent root rot.
• Weed Suppression: Once established, the cultivar is highly efficient at self-managing the area. Its dense matting habit makes it an excellent weed suppressor, reducing the need for mechanical or chemical intervention.
• Propagation and Repair: The variety shows excellent resilience. If patches appear due to weather stress, it can be easily repaired via cuttings. The root system establishes quickly, allowing for rapid canopy closure.

When harvesting for medicinal purposes, timing is critical. We recommend gathering the material before the mass flowering stage to maintain high concentrations of active compounds. The 'Kapris' farm has bred this strain to be relatively low-maintenance, making it a reliable choice for professional ground-cover management that requires minimal labor once the initial establishment phase is passed.
