Onion Lencelot

Practical Potential of Lencelot Leek

For farms focused on the fresh market and early processing, Bejo's breeding offers a balanced solution. Lencelot is an early-maturing leek variety that meets the demand for high-quality raw materials during the summer and autumn period. Its primary value lies in crop predictability under standard farming practices.

Usage Scenarios and Agronomy

The main niche for this variety is the salad market and processing, where the visual appeal and taste of the stalk are paramount.

• Timing and Harvesting: The growing period is 90–100 days. Given the manual harvesting requirement, this variety is convenient for small and medium-sized farms where the integrity of the white part of the plant is critical. Hand-harvesting minimizes damage, which is essential for sales in the premium fresh produce segment.
• Storage: A shelf life of 1-2 months requires efficient logistics. Lencelot is best suited for "field-to-market" sales or short-term storage in cold chambers. This makes it an optimal choice for growers supplying local retail chains and markets that require weekly supplies of fresh produce.

Cultivation Insights

Dutch breeding by Bejo ensures high uniformity. When proper planting density is maintained, growers achieve a synchronized harvest, significantly simplifying sales planning. The plant responds well to intensive irrigation, which is the key factor for developing a robust and juicy blanched stalk—the primary commercial indicator of Lencelot.
