Agronomic Guidelines for Charentais Melon Cultivation

The Charentais melon, a complex hybrid of French origin officially registered in Ukraine in 2025, requires precise management to reach its full potential. Understanding its growth phases is key to successful production.

Planting and Spacing

Transplanting is the preferred method for this hybrid. Seedlings should be raised for 25–30 days before moving to the field. Optimal spacing is 140–160 cm between rows and 50–70 cm between plants. Given the moderate size of the leaf blade, proper spacing is essential to ensure adequate airflow, which helps prevent foliage diseases.

Soil and Irrigation Management

Charentais thrives in well-drained, sandy loam soils with a pH of 6.0–7.0. Water management is the most critical factor: while consistent moisture is needed during the vegetative phase, irrigation must be carefully controlled during fruit development. To maximize sugar content and prevent skin cracking, irrigation should be significantly reduced or stopped 10–14 days before harvest.

Developmental Care

• Early Growth: During the 3-leaf stage, petioles are semi-erect. Ensure the plants receive maximum sunlight to support healthy development.
• Flowering: As an andromonoecious hybrid, Charentais requires effective pollination. In greenhouse conditions, the introduction of pollinators or manual assistance is recommended.
• Fruit Maturation: The fruit is round with a characteristic yellowish skin color at maturity. Because the fruit is relatively small and the peduncle is thick, it is advisable to use mulch to keep the fruit off the soil, preventing rot and skin blemishes.

Harvesting should be timed with the appearance of the fruit's signature aroma and the shift in skin color. Because the skin is delicate, careful handling during harvest and transport is necessary to maintain market quality.
