Cultivation Guidelines for Romanostar Melon

The Romanostar hybrid, introduced by Enza Zaden (Netherlands) in 2025, is designed for growers seeking a balance between plant vigor and fruit quality. With its moderate leaf blade size and semi-erect petiole position, the plant architecture allows for efficient canopy management and light penetration, which is essential for uniform fruit ripening.

Planting and Spacing

For optimal results, transplanting 25-30 day-old seedlings is recommended. A planting density of 1.4–1.6 meters between rows and 0.4–0.5 meters between plants is ideal. This spacing ensures adequate airflow, reducing the risk of humidity-related issues, given the plant's moderate leaf lobing and density.

Irrigation and Nutrient Management

Romanostar thrives under drip irrigation systems. During the flowering phase, characterized by monoecious flowers, maintaining consistent soil moisture is crucial. The transition from the yellowish-green immature fruit stage to the final deep orange color is rapid, requiring precise nutrient management.

• Fertilization: Prioritize potassium applications during the fruit-filling stage to enhance sugar accumulation and ensure the characteristic intense orange skin color.
• Plant Care: The plant exhibits low leaf blistering and moderate leaf color intensity, making it relatively easy to maintain. Regular pruning of lateral shoots after the 2nd or 3rd leaf above the fruit helps focus energy on fruit development.
• Harvesting: The fruit reaches its peak quality when the skin transitions to a strong orange hue. Given the medium thickness of the peduncle, careful harvesting is recommended to maintain the integrity of the fruit.
