Anise Hyssop – a perennial herbaceous plant growing up to 1.5 m tall, which actively grows from March and blooms from May to August. Its inflorescences are gathered into dense spike-like bundles, colored in shades of lilac, blue-violet, or white, while the leaves have a serrated shape, heart-lanceolate form, and are slightly aromatic with notes of anise.
The plant prefers loose, fertile soils with moderate moisture and a neutral pH. It does not tolerate limed, clayey, or waterlogged areas but grows well on clean soils with sufficient lighting and protection from the north wind. Irrigation does not require frequent intervention; during drought periods, moderate moisture levels must be maintained.
Anise Hyssop possesses a rich spectrum of beneficial properties: leaves, inflorescences, and essential oil are used as seasonings for soups, salads, vegetables, and fish, as well as for making tea. In medicine, the plant is used to treat the nervous system, bronchial asthma, dermatitis, gastritis, and other diseases; its decoctions help alleviate headaches and insomnia. Anise Hyssop is also valued as a valuable nectar-producing plant: throughout the day, it releases nectar, ensuring high productivity for beekeepers.
To grow anise hyssop, it is recommended to sow seeds from March to April at a depth of 2–2.5 cm and with a distance between plants of 10–15 cm. After harvesting, weeding, loosening, and fertilizing with nitrogen fertilizers or manure can be conducted. Cut leaves are dried in the shade or in drying cabinets, crushed, and stored in glass jars for future use.
