The hazelnut variety 'Tonda di Biglini' is a 2025 addition to the State Register of Plant Varieties of Ukraine. This Italian cultivar is characterized by moderate vigor and controlled root sucker production, which simplifies orchard management and reduces pruning requirements.

Field performance and adaptability

The variety shows high plasticity and is officially recommended for all agro-climatic zones of Ukraine: Steppe, Forest-Steppe, and Polissya. Its early vegetation cycle allows the plant to utilize spring moisture effectively before the onset of peak summer heat. Moderate pubescence on the annual shoots and leaves acts as a natural defense mechanism, helping the plant maintain turgor during dry spells.

Flowering and yield dynamics

‘Tonda di Biglini’ is known for its early bud break. A key biological feature is the dichogamy: female flowers bloom later than male catkins, necessitating the presence of pollinator varieties to ensure consistent yields. The plant typically forms clusters of 2 to 3 nuts.

Nut characteristics

The nuts feature a classic spherical shape and small size, typical of high-quality Italian cultivars prized for their kernel flavor. The shell is light brown with a moderate number of stripes. The absence of double kernels and the compact shape of the nut make this variety highly suitable for mechanized processing.
