Fennel 'CAESAR' is a variety of fennel (Foeniculum vulgare Mill.) registered in 2024, intended for cultivation in garden and plot conditions. The plant is perennial but is most often grown as an annual due to its rapid growth and yield. Fennel leaves have a pronounced anise flavor, making it a popular ingredient in cuisine.
The fennel fruit weighs between 180 and 220 grams and has a characteristic 'top' of green foliage resembling cilantro. The root fruit matures in approximately 1½ months, while leaves can be harvested as early as one month after sowing, when they grow to 20–30 cm. To achieve maximum yield, it is recommended to plant fennel in sunny beds in fertile loose loam or clay-loam soils; the plant can also grow in semi-shade.
'CAESAR' fennel is rich in fiber, potassium, essential oils, and vitamins (including provitamin A and folic acid). It possesses antispasmodic, diuretic, expectorant, and antimicrobial properties. It is consumed both as a fresh vegetable and as a dried product: leaves and stems can be boiled, stewed, or used as a seasoning for pickling. When used correctly, fennel aids digestion, supports heart and skin health, and helps control weight. However, before consumption, possible contraindications related to estrogen-dependent diseases and hypotension should be considered.
