Currant ALTAI ANNIVERSARY

Field Experience: Growing Golden Currant

When selecting a variety for an orchard, 'Yubiley Altaya' from FANTZA is a top-tier choice for those prioritizing robustness and yield reliability. This golden currant variety is a real workhorse that adapts well to various conditions while maintaining consistent production. The bush grows into a sprawling shape, reaching 1.5 to 2 meters in height. From an operator's perspective, this means spacing is crucial—don't crowd the rows, or maintenance will become a logistical nightmare.

Yield and Cultivation Management

This is a late-ripening variety, taking 55–65 days from bud break to harvest. This timing is a strategic advantage, as it hits the market when earlier varieties have finished. You can expect 3–5 kg of high-quality black berries per bush, ranging from 1.3 to 1.8 cm in diameter. Given this weight, you must install supports or trellises; otherwise, the heavy branches will sprawl across the ground, leading to soil contamination and fruit damage.

Disease Resistance and Fruit Quality

The main technical benefit of 'Yubiley Altaya' is its strong resistance to powdery mildew, which significantly reduces the need for heavy fungicide application. In terms of chemical composition, it’s a balanced berry: 10% sugar content paired with 2.8% acidity creates a refreshing flavor profile. With a vitamin C content of 250 mg/100g, it is excellent for both fresh consumption and commercial processing. The skin is firm, ensuring that the fruit survives handling and shipping without turning into mush.
