SY TOPAZ – a mid-season corn hybrid for grain use with an FAO index of 340, intended for cultivation in forest-steppe and forested regions of Ukraine. This intensive hybrid features a high yield potential, which in 2023 ranged from 91 to 132 centners per hectare at 14% grain moisture. Grain type is dent, with protein content of 10–11% and starch content of 72.2–73.8%. SY TOPAZ exhibits high initial growth rates and higher-than-average rates of grain moisture loss during maturation, which contributes to high-quality grain formation.
The hybrid demonstrates high resistance to pathogens causing stalk and root rot, as well as to the airborne smut (sphacelotheca). Plants remain upright throughout the entire vegetative period and retain their quality even after prolonged field storage following maturity. Thanks to its very strong stalk, SY TOPAZ withstands prolonged delays, allowing harvest to be conducted at optimal or even later dates without compromising grain quality.
Cultivation recommendations include observing optimal sowing dates and seeding rates, which depend on soil moisture levels. For areas with unstable moisture, a planting density of 55–60 thousand plants per hectare is recommended, while for areas with adequate moisture, 60–70 thousand plants per hectare is advised. The hybrid is well-suited for intensive farming and irrigation, has good return on investment, and is suitable for monoculture.
