Artichoke mottled crinkle virus

The virus is an obligate parasite, meaning it relies entirely on the host plant's cellular machinery to replicate its single-stranded RNA. It integrates into the host cell metabolism, effectively turning the plant into a factory for viral production.

Once infection is established, it becomes systemic. The virus travels rapidly through the phloem, invading new shoots, leaves, and eventually the roots, ensuring the entire plant is compromised.

AMCV is known for its remarkable stability outside the host. It can persist in soil and plant debris for long periods, retaining its infectious potential even in the absence of a live host.

Transmission in the field is primarily mechanical. It spreads through contaminated tools, handling of infected plants, and even direct contact between healthy and diseased tissues during cultivation practices.

Early symptoms appear as chlorotic mottling on the foliage. These discolored patches often follow the leaf veins, creating a distinctive pattern that differentiates the disease from nutrient deficiencies.

As the virus progresses, the leaves exhibit crinkling and distortion. The edges of the leaves may become uneven, puckered, or curled, significantly reducing the surface area available for photosynthesis.

Infected plants display stunted growth compared to healthy ones. The nodes are often shortened, leading to a compact, bushy appearance that lacks the vigor of a non-infected artichoke plant.
