Biologically, this pathogen is classified as an obligate or facultative parasite capable of maintaining viability in plant debris for long periods.

Reproduction of the pathogen occurs through the formation of pycnidia, specialized fruiting bodies in which spores (conidia) mature.

The fungus is spread by wind, raindrops, and also through infected seed material and agricultural tools.
