Radiomycosis

These fungi are typically soil-borne saprotrophs; however, under favorable conditions, they can exhibit phytopathogenic properties. They are characterized by rapid mycelial growth in suitable environments.

Biologically, Radiomyces are distinguished by the specific structure of their sporangia. The spores of these fungi possess high resistance to adverse environmental conditions, which complicates control efforts.

Reproduction occurs primarily through asexual means via the formation of sporangiospores. The fungal mycelium is extensively branched and capable of rapidly colonizing organic matter in the soil.

In agronomic practice, such fungi are often found as components of the rhizosphere microbiota, but when the balance is disturbed, they may transition to parasitism on weakened plants.

The primary condition for the development of radiomycosis is high humidity in both soil and air. The fungus reproduces actively during excessive irrigation or prolonged rainfall.

Temperature plays a decisive role: moderately warm weather facilitates rapid spore germination. Water stagnation creates an ideal microclimate for the colonization of plant tissues.

The presence of fresh, undecomposed plant debris in the soil increases the risk of infection. The pathogen uses this as a primary nutrient base to build up its inoculum.

Poor soil aeration, caused by compaction or a lack of cultivation, creates anaerobic zones where fungi of the genus Radiomyces thrive.

The lack of crop rotation and continuous monocropping contribute to the accumulation of the pathogen in the topsoil, increasing the infection pressure with each season.

The damage caused by radiomycosis manifests as the inhibition of growth and development in affected plants. The pathogen can cause root rot, which leads to the death of young seedlings.

When vegetative parts are infected, the fungus disrupts the process of photosynthesis and metabolism in plant tissues. This results in a general decline in immunity and resistance to other diseases.

Plants affected by fungi of this genus often show stunted growth, and their leaves may turn yellow and wither prematurely. Yield drops proportionally to the severity of the infection.

A particular danger is the infection of seeds and sprouts during germination. In such cases, radiomycosis becomes a cause of sparse stands and the necessity for replanting.

Damage to tissues by the mycelium creates entry points for bacterial infections, which often leads to secondary rot in fruits and root crops during storage.

The main method of control is adherence to proper agricultural practices. It is crucial to perform timely soil cultivation to improve oxygen access and prevent moisture stagnation.

It is necessary to strictly control irrigation rates, avoiding waterlogging of fields. An effective preventive measure is the application of well-composted organic fertilizers.

Following crop rotation helps break the reproduction cycle of the pathogen. Rotating crops with different moisture requirements reduces the buildup of infection in the soil.

To protect crops, it is recommended to use high-quality, disinfected seed material. Seed treatment with modern fungicides reduces the risk of early-stage infection.
