The causative agent of this disease is the Gram-negative bacterium Pectobacterium carnegieana (formerly classified as Erwinia carnegieana). It is a phytopathogenic microorganism that specializes in destroying the tissues of succulent plants.

The disease is classified as a bacterial infection leading to wet rot. The bacterium actively produces enzymes (pectinases) that break down the middle lamellae of the plant cell walls, causing tissue collapse.
The infection is systemic, as the pathogen rapidly spreads through the vascular system of the cactus. The bacteria thrive in both aerobic and anaerobic conditions within the plant tissues.
These bacteria possess a high survival capacity in soil substrates and decaying plant material. They easily persist in moist conditions, waiting for favorable opportunities to infect host plants.
It is important to note that this microorganism is extremely aggressive toward the Cactaceae family. In field conditions, it is most infamously known for causing rot in the giant Saguaro cactus.
The first sign of infection is the appearance of soft, water-soaked spots on the stem, which darken rapidly. The internal tissues within these areas lose turgor and turn into a foul-smelling mush.
As the process progresses, the rot penetrates deeper into the stem, eventually affecting the vascular bundles. The cactus may suddenly collapse or lean to one side due to the destruction of internal structural tissues.
Exudate—a bacterial slime—often leaks onto the surface of the affected areas. While a crust may form over the site upon drying, the decomposition process continues actively inside.
A characteristic symptom is the foul, rotting odor emitted by the infected plant. This is a direct consequence of tissue decomposition caused by bacterial enzymatic activity.

Temperature plays a critical role: the bacterium is most active at temperatures above 25–30 degrees Celsius. Hot and humid weather facilitates the lightning-fast spread of the infection.
Epidermal damage acts as a gateway for the infection. Any mechanical injuries, insect bites, or improper pruning significantly increase the risk of Pectobacterium carnegieana entry.
Poor air circulation around the plants and inadequate greenhouse ventilation contribute to high-humidity microclimates. This slows moisture evaporation and accelerates the rotting process.
Using a dense, poorly draining substrate prevents adequate root respiration. Under these conditions, the cactus becomes weakened and significantly more susceptible to bacterial attack.
Bacterial soft rot causes severe damage to cactus collections due to the rapid nature of the disease. Without emergency intervention, the plant can die within just a few days.
The pathogen poses a serious threat to surrounding plants. Bacteria can be transmitted through irrigation water droplets, contaminated gardening tools, or insect vectors.
In natural habitats, the disease is capable of devastating entire cactus populations. It leads to the mass mortality of large specimens, causing significant ecological disruption.
Economic losses in the ornamental plant industry include not only the loss of aesthetic value but also the need for complete disposal of contaminated plant batches.
Due to the high virulence of the pathogen, control is difficult. Often, the only effective way to prevent further spread is the complete destruction of the infected specimen.
The first and most important step is the immediate isolation of the infected plant from the healthy collection. All tools used on the diseased cactus must be thoroughly disinfected.
If a localized infection is found, carefully excise the affected tissue back to healthy, green tissue using a sterile blade. The cut surface should be treated with an antiseptic or charcoal powder.
Prevention relies heavily on strict irrigation management. Avoid getting water on the cactus stem and ensure that the growing medium dries out completely between watering sessions.
It is recommended to use a high-quality, well-aerated substrate with a good drainage layer. This prevents the risk of root-related rotting processes.
The use of biological fungicides may be effective only in the very early stages. Regular inspection of the collection for the first signs of the disease is essential for long-term success.
